Wildcats Open Season with a Win over Belmont
9/8/2017 - While Milton is certainly known for their dynamic offense, it was defense that dominated for the Wildcats as they opened up the 2017 season with a convincing 28-7 victory over the visiting Belmont Marauders at Brook Field Friday night.
Milton used a swarming team defense led by senior captain Patrick Fitzgerald and some timely sacks from senior Alex Beauzile, junior Ryan Hoey (2) and sophomore Stephen Joyce to stymie Belmont’s offensive drives as the Wildcats shut out the Marauders until late in the 4th quarter.
Offensively Milton came at Belmont with a tandem quarterback attack of Rich Laine and Xavier Fischer, which really started to click as the game went on. Each quarterback lead two scoring drives.
Defense dominated in a scoreless 1st Quarter until Milton mounted a drive behind running and receiving skills of junior Smith Charles. Fischer connected with senior captain Eddie Hassell with a five yard strike to put Milton up 7-0 on the first play of the 2nd quarter. Then after a quick three and out from Belmont, Hassell got his second TD of the night as Laine hit him in stride down the right sideline for a 60-yard catch. Sophomore Max Winkler connected on both extra points. The half ended with Milton up 14-0.
The Wildcats came out on fire in the 2nd half and put together a 7-play 58-yard drive capped by a 39 yard pass from Laine to captain William (Wigs) Crowley to make the score 21-0. After a great directional kickoff by junior Kilian Smith pinned Belmont at the 8 yard line, Milton’s defense again held the Marauders. Milton would close out their scoring for the night with a 43-yard drive highlighted by some hard running by junior Moses Mowio and capped by Fischer’s one-yard scamper into the end zone.
All three Milton teams posted victories in week one. The freshman won 20-6 and the junior varsity prevailed 34-0 on Saturday. Milton will travel to Quincy (o-1) next Friday for a match-up against the Presidents. The game will be played at Veterans Stadium with kick-off at 7pm.

Milton Pulls Away from Quincy, 27-12
9/15/2017 - On a warm damp night at Veterans Stadium the Milton Wildcats overcame some sloppy play to turn back the Quincy Presidents 27-12 to start the season 2-0.
The game started off tough for Milton as Quincy took the opening kickoff and drove 71 yards mostly on the ground to grab the lead. After junior Smith Charles blocked the extra point the Presidents lead 6-0.
The offense, despite great field position and productive drives was unable to score for most of the first half. There were highlight plays from senior Eddie Hassell and juniors Isiah Woodley and Jamier Woods, but untimely penalties and turnovers kept the Wildcats off the board. The defense however was stellar, consistently pinning Quincy deep in their own territory The Presidents quarterback was under constant pressure from the entire defensive front lead by lineman Ryan Hoey and linebacker Alex Caputo.
The breakthrough came late in the second quarter when sophomore Stephen Joyce blocked a Quincy punt which was recovered on the Presidents 3-yard line. The next play Smith Charles punched it in over the left side to give Milton it’s first lead 7-6. After Quincy went 3 and out, Milton quarterback Luke McMenamin orchestrated a 5-play 74-yard drive all through the air. Wigs Crowley finished the drive when he took a swing pass and bowled his way into the endzone from 11 yards out. The half would end with Milton leading 13-6.
As the rain picked up in the 2nd half both teams had trouble moving the ball in their first series. Quincy finally broke through with a short rushing touchdown and after a failed 2-point conversion Milton’s lead was only 13-12. On their next series, the Presidents had a sustained drive going but was stopped on 3rd down when captain Patrick Fitzgerald sacked the QB for a 13-yard loss. Milton then went on a 59-yard scoring drive highlighted by a 21-yard pass play from McMenamin to Woods and a 13-yard td run by Moses Moiwo. Now with a 20-12 lead the defense forced another stop.
Milton would close out the scoring with a 47-yard 3-play drive. Smith Charles opened the drive with a beautiful run. He reversed field for a 35-yard scamper that set up Alex Beauzille who finished the drive with a 2-yard plunge.
Milton will open conference play as they face the Natick Redhawks in Natick at 6pm next Saturday. Both teams enter 2-0 on the young season and Natick is yet to yield a point.

Defense Locks Down Wamps
11/23/2017 - The Milton Wildcats and the Braintree Wamps squared off for the 88th time on Thanksgiving morning both looking for an 8th win to cap successful seasons.
Defense was the story of this game as both offenses struggled to find consistent production. Penalties and dropped passes stalled the Wildcats on the first two drives, while the Wamps entered the red zone on their second drive but failed to connect on a field goal.
Milton broke the ice late in the first quarter as Isaiah Woodley took a wider receiver screen
from Luke McMenamin 77 yards behind great blocks from Matt Dunn and Dan McAuliffe. Max Winkler nailed the extra point, then perfectly place the kick-off behind the front line for Chris Caputo to recover.
Primed with excellent field position for the second time, the Cats failed to take advantage and turned the ball back over on an interception off a dropped pass. This was a pattern that would repeat itself throughout the game.
Back and forth, we went struggling for field position until Braintree's Billy Silva made a great run breaking tackles in the backfield and cutting back behind our defense which had over perused. His 80 yard run and PAT tied the game at 7 in the second period.
We went to the half tied as we were unable to cash in on Moses Moiwo's fumble recovery and Jamier Woods interception.
The 2nd half looked promising as Ryan Hoey caused a fumble on the opening kickoff and Isaiah Lynch recovered it on the Wamps 30. Unfortunately McMenanin's pass intended for Eddie Hassell was defected and intercepted at the Wamps one yard line on the following play. The defense forced a quick punt, which Hassell returned to the Wamps 37.
Finally the Cats looked primed to strike but it wasn't easy as the drive featured and 4th & 10 conversion pass to Woodley and a 3rd & 8 pass to Mikkel Lafleur setting us up on the 6 yard line. Lafleur's catch was his first of the season and he was belted on the play. McMenamin scored on the next play to make it 14-7.
The final quarter was the toughest was we committed 3 turnovers and Braintree had several chances to score. Our defense continued to rise to the challenge stopping everything. Linebackers Alex Caputo, Aidan Walsh and Lynch along with Hoey and Pat Fitzgerald lead the front seven with big hits and great hustle. The secondary was solid as Hassell battled down a 4th down attempt.
The game symbolically ended with senior Xavier Fischer knelling on the Paw as we ran out the clock. We had Left Our Mark! These senior's had just won their 26th game in the past three seasons becoming the winningest class in school history.
